Sitka is the most culturally layered port in the VV Alaska network — the capital of Russian Alaska from 1808 until the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, and before that a center of Tlingit culture for thousands of years. The combination of Tlingit heritage, Russian colonial history, and extraordinary natural setting — Sitka Sound with its constellation of volcanic islands, the massive bulk of Mount Edgecumbe (an extinct volcano) across the water, and the dense Sitka spruce forest pressing in from every direction — makes this the most distinctively atmospheric port in Southeast Alaska.
Sitka National Historical Park
Sitka National Historical Park preserves the site of the 1804 Battle of Sitka — the last major armed conflict between Russian colonizers and the Tlingit people, who had lived in Southeast Alaska for thousands of years. The park’s totem pole trail runs through old-growth forest between the site of the Tlingit fort and the Russian blockhouse, with 18 totem poles standing among the trees. The cultural center inside the park has working Tlingit and Haida artists demonstrating traditional crafts. This is the finest combination of natural landscape and cultural heritage at any Alaska port.
The Russian Bishop’s House
The Russian Bishop’s House is the only surviving example of Russian colonial architecture in Alaska — a log structure built in 1842 that served as the residence of the Russian Orthodox bishop and is now managed by the National Park Service. The interior has been restored to its 1853 appearance and the guided tour provides the most immersive insight into Russian Alaska available anywhere.
Sea Otters and Wildlife
Sitka’s waters support a large and highly visible sea otter population — the animals float on their backs in kelp beds near the shore with the characteristic casual elegance that makes them impossible not to photograph. Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, puffins, and marbled murrelets are all regularly visible from small boat tours in Sitka Sound. The wildlife viewing from Sitka is consistently excellent across the Alaska season.
Raptor Center and Salmon
The Alaska Raptor Center rehabilitates injured bald eagles, owls, and other birds of prey and allows visitors to see the birds at close range during the rehabilitation process. It is one of the most intimate wildlife encounters available from any VV port. Sitka also has excellent salmon fishing in season — the Silver Salmon Derby in August is one of Southeast Alaska’s premier fishing events.

- Sitka is quieter than Juneau. With fewer cruise ship calls than Juneau or Ketchikan, Sitka retains a more genuine character. The locals are visible, the wildlife is accessible, and the cultural sites are uncrowded.
