This guide gives you the decision framework to get it right at every port.
The Core Trade-Off
Shore Things through VV: typically more expensive, curated for adults-only groups, include the ship-wait guarantee, and are bookable using Sailor Loot. Independent excursions: often cheaper, more flexible, and available from a wider range of operators — but without the ship-wait guarantee and not payable with Sailor Loot.
The ship-wait guarantee is the key variable. It means that if you book a VV Shore Thing and the excursion runs late through circumstances beyond your control (traffic, weather delays, boat mechanical issues), the ship will wait for you to return. If you arrange an independent excursion and it runs late, the ship sails without you. You pay for your own flight to the next port and any associated costs.
When to Always Book Shore Things Through VV
- Complex logistics or multiple transport legs. Any excursion that involves boat + bus + hiking, or involves traveling to a remote location on a tight timeline. The ship-wait guarantee is essential protection.
- Remote or less-developed ports. In ports where independent transportation is unreliable, taxis are scarce, or local operators have inconsistent reliability, VV’s curated Shore Things remove significant risk.
- First-time visit to a destination. If you’ve never been to a port before and don’t know the lay of the land, Shore Things provide structure and expertise that independent exploration cannot.
- When you want to use Sailor Loot. Independent operators do not accept Sailor Loot. If you have significant Loot credit, applying it to premium Shore Things is dramatically better value than spending it on bar charges.
- Stingray City (Grand Cayman) and similar signature experiences. Some Shore Things are so logistically complex and so dependent on coordination that independent booking adds meaningful risk with limited savings.
When Independent Excursions Make More Sense
- Walkable port cities. In Cartagena’s Old City, Old San Juan, Bridgetown, Oranjestad, and other compact port cities, a taxi to the center and a self-guided walk is both cheaper and more flexible than a guided Shore Thing. The ship-wait guarantee is irrelevant — you can walk back if needed.
- Simple beach days. If you want to go to a beach and sit on it, taking a local taxi or shuttle to a public beach is typically $15-20 round trip versus $45-80 through VV. The beach is identical.
- Repeat visitors to familiar ports. If you’ve been to an island before and know the taxi rate, the good local restaurants, and how long it takes to get back to the ship, independent navigation is entirely reasonable.
- Specific local operators you have researched. Some independent operators (particularly for diving, private sailing, and specialty food tours) are significantly better than the VV curated equivalent at lower cost. Research is required.
The Gray Zone
Martinique rum distillery tours, Barbados beach days, Mediterranean walking tours, and many Caribbean island experiences fall into a gray zone where both options are reasonable. In these cases: if you have Sailor Loot to spend and the VV Shore Thing is well-reviewed, use it. If you’re budget-conscious and the activity is low-risk, independent works fine.
