St. Lucia delivers two of the most visually and experientially dramatic port day experiences in the VV Caribbean network: the Piton mountain twins rising directly from the sea at the island’s southwestern tip, and the Sulphur Springs volcanic field and mud bath in the Soufriere Valley. Both are accessed from Castries (the cruise port) by road, approximately 90 minutes south. Do not spend your St. Lucia day in Castries. Get south to Soufriere.
The Pitons
Gros Piton and Petit Piton are twin volcanic spires rising 2,600 and 2,400 feet from the sea just north of Soufriere. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the defining landscape of St. Lucia. Viewing them from the water — on a boat excursion or from the beach at Anse Chastanet or Anse des Pitons — creates one of the most overwhelming visual experiences available from any Caribbean port. Gros Piton is hikeable with a guide (3-4 hours round trip, strenuous) and the summit view over the island is extraordinary. Sulphur Springs

The experience is simultaneously industrial and otherworldly. The gray, yellow, and green sulfurous landscape with steam rising from every surface is unlike any other Caribbean shore experience. A short walk from the springs: the Sulphur Springs mud bath — warm, mineral-rich volcanic mud believed to have healing properties. You coat yourself, wait 15 minutes, and rinse in natural thermal pools. Warning: remove silver jewelry before entering the mud. The sulfur will blacken it permanently within minutes.
Anse Chastanet Beach
Below the Pitons, Anse Chastanet is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean — a small cove of black sand (volcanic) and golden sand with the Pitons looming directly above. The snorkeling directly off the beach is extraordinary — a coral reef within 30 meters of the shore with exceptional visibility and marine diversity.
