Not every great bar experience on a Virgin Voyages ship involves sitting at one. Virgin Voyages offers onboard mixology classes — ticketed experiences where you learn the craft behind the cocktails you’ve been ordering all sailing. It’s part education, part social event, part excuse to drink three cocktails in 90 minutes and call it learning.
For anyone who loves cocktails, it’s one of the most satisfying uses of a sea day afternoon. Check out Best Cocktails on Virgin Voyages: A Bar-by-Bar Guide.
What Is the Mixology Class?

The primary mixology experience on Virgin Voyages ships is called Shot 4 Shot, a guided cocktail-making masterclass held in The Test Kitchen — which provides a genuinely stunning laboratory backdrop for a spirits education event. The class is led by one of the ship’s expert bartenders, who walks participants through cocktail technique, spirit knowledge, and the specific builds behind three to four signature Virgin Voyages cocktails.
The experience also includes a phone photography lesson — how to photograph your cocktail creations in the Test Kitchen setting — which turns out to be genuinely useful content for anyone who cares about their social media documentation of the voyage.
Cost and Booking

Shot 4 Shot is a ticketed experience at approximately $45 per person. Like the Grog Walk, it is classified as an “experience” rather than individual drinks — which means your Bar Tab cannot be applied. Payment comes from Sailor Loot or your onboard account.
Book Shot 4 Shot through the Virgin Voyages app once you’re onboard. It fills up — check availability on embarkation day and book quickly if it’s on your list.
Spirit and Mixology Master Classes
Beyond Shot 4 Shot, Virgin Voyages periodically offers additional spirit master classes covering specific categories — rum, tequila, whiskey — in more educational depth. These vary by sailing and ship. Check the app on boarding day to see what’s scheduled on your specific voyage.
Some ships also feature dedicated mixology events tied to themed sailings — mezcal tastings on Mexico-route sailings, rum education on Caribbean itineraries. The Happenings Cast can tell you what’s planned for your specific sailing.
Who It’s For
Mixology classes are ideal for: cocktail enthusiasts who want to understand what they’ve been drinking, couples looking for a shared activity on a sea day afternoon, solo travelers wanting a social experience with a built-in common interest, and anyone who has ordered enough cocktails on the ship to become genuinely curious about how they’re made. Insider Tips from Joel and Erin
- The Test Kitchen is a spectacular setting for a cocktail class. The laboratory aesthetic makes the photography portion of Shot 4 Shot genuinely fun, not just a gimmick.
- Budget Sailor Loot for this, not Bar Tab. Reminder: Bar Tab won’t cover it. Make sure you have Sailor Loot available or plan to charge to your account.
- Ask the bartender afterward about their personal favorites. The bartenders who lead these classes are among the most knowledgeable people on the ship. A conversation after class often yields recommendations that change your whole drinking strategy for the rest of the sailing.
