The Running Track: Jogging Around the Ship on Virgin Voyages

The Runway is the Virgin Voyages running track — a 255-meter loop that wraps around the aft funnel on Deck 17, giving joggers a 360-degree panoramic ocean view as they run. It is, objectively, one of the most scenic running environments on earth. Salt air, open water in every direction, the ship’s wake visible behind you, the horizon ahead. It makes a 5K feel considerably more interesting than the same distance on a treadmill facing a gym wall.

Roughly six laps equals one mile. On a 7-night sailing with multiple sea days, a morning run on The Runway becomes the kind of ritual that Sailors build their whole day around.

The Track Itself

The Runway is an outdoor rubberized running track on Deck 17, fully open to the elements. The surface is designed for running and walking — more forgiving than a ship deck, more stable than improvised routes through the ship. The 255-meter loop means it’s not a full-length track, but the scenic quality more than compensates for the repeated laps required to build distance.

The track is open at all hours. Early morning — before the deck fills with other Sailors — is the most peaceful time to run. Sunrise runs on The Runway, with the ship steaming through calm Caribbean water as the light comes up, are among the most frequently mentioned memorable experiences from Virgin Voyages Sailors who run.

Running on Sea Days vs. Port Days

Sea days are the best running days. The ship is moving through open water, the weather is often calmer than in port, and the deck is less trafficked in the morning hours. Port days work too, but the ship’s motion changes when navigating into harbors, and the deck tends to be busier as Sailors prepare to disembark.

Wind is the main variable on The Runway. On particularly windy sea days, running into the headwind at the bow creates significant resistance; running with the wind at the stern is considerably easier. Some Sailors find the wind a welcome challenge; others prefer the more controlled environment of the Training Camp treadmills on gusty days.

What to Bring

The track is fully outdoors with no shade. On Caribbean sailings, the mid-morning sun is intense. Sun protection is not optional — SPF 30+ minimum, hat if you run with one, and hydration. The ship provides water stations near the fitness areas, and Gym & Tonic (directly below The Runway) is the natural post-run stop for a juice or a reset cocktail.

Insider Tips from Joel and Erin

  • Run at sunrise. The Runway in the first 30 minutes of morning light, with a Caribbean horizon and calm water, is one of the defining experiences of a Virgin Voyages sailing for runners. Set the alarm.
  • Six laps per mile. Use the lap counter in your running app or watch to track distance. At 255 meters per loop, it takes 6.4 loops to reach one mile.
  • Stop by Gym & Tonic immediately after. The cold-pressed juice or protein smoothie at Gym & Tonic is the perfect post-run recovery stop. The Well-being Pool is right there for a cooldown dip.
