Panama Canal 17-Night Cruise on Virgin Voyages: Everything You Need to Know

The Panama Canal is one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history — a 50-mile channel connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, completed in 1914 after a decade of construction that cost tens of thousands of lives and changed global trade forever. Crossing it by ship is a bucket-list experience unlike anything else in cruising: watching your ship rise through a series of gravity-powered locks while jungle presses against the canal walls on both sides, the feel of crossing from one ocean to another, the sense of the canal’s scale and significance as it unfolds around you.

Virgin Voyages’ Panama Canal crossing on Brilliant Lady is the fastest-selling itinerary in Virgin Voyages history. When it launched, it sold out at a pace that surprised even Virgin Voyages’s own booking team. There are two sailings: Miami to Los Angeles (16 nights, departing March 21, 2026) and Los Angeles to Miami (17 nights, departing October 29, 2026).

The Route

Panama Canal & Pacific Wonders (Miami → LA, 16 nights): Departs Miami, calls at Cartagena (Colombia), Colón (Panama), Puntarenas (Costa Rica), Puerto Quetzal (Guatemala), Cabo San Lucas (Mexico), and arrives Los Angeles. The eastward crossing of the Canal happens between Colón on the Atlantic side and the Pacific exit toward Costa Rica.

Picturesque Panama Canal Collective (LA → Miami, 17 nights): The reverse journey. Departs Los Angeles, calls at Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Quetzal, Puntarenas, Panama City, the Canal crossing, Cartagena, and arrives Miami.

The Canal Crossing Itself

The transit takes approximately 8 hours and is one of the most immersive experiences available on any cruise. You watch the ship enter the Gatun Locks on the Atlantic side, rise three steps to the level of Gatun Lake, cross the lake and the Gaillard Cut (the most difficult engineering section), descend through the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores Locks, and emerge into the Pacific. Every step is visible from the ship’s decks. Virgin Voyages provides commentary and programming throughout the transit. Sailors who have done it describe it as one of the most unexpectedly moving experiences of their lives.

The Port Calls

The ports on these itineraries — Cartagena, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Cabo San Lucas — are among the most culturally rich in Latin America. Cartagena’s walled colonial city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Costa Rica’s rainforest and wildlife are extraordinary. Guatemala’s Antigua (accessible from Puerto Quetzal) is one of the finest colonial cities in the Americas. These are not routine Caribbean port calls.

Practical Considerations

Both Panama Canal sailings are one-way repositioning voyages. You’ll need a flight home from the arrival city (LA or Miami). Plan your flights before you book. The bar Tab calculator math changes significantly at 16-17 nights — consider the unlimited package option.

Insider Tips from Joel and Erin

  • Book the October reverse sailing if March 2026 is already gone. The March 2026 sailing was Virgin Voyages’s fastest-selling itinerary ever. The October 2026 reverse crossing opened later and still has availability as of early 2026.
  • Claim a deck spot for the Canal transit as early as possible on transit day. The best viewing positions on the upper decks fill fast on Canal day. Be out by 6am to claim your spot.
  • Plan your flights carefully. This is a one-way sailing. You need a flight from LA (for the Miami departure) or from Miami (for the LA departure). Book both your flights and the cruise at the same time to avoid last-minute airfare surprises.
