From the moment you book until the moment you disembark, the app manages your check-in, your dining reservations, your Bar Tab balance, your Shore Things, your cabin access (via the Band), your event schedule, and your onboard communications. First-timers who arrive without a working app setup consistently have a rougher embarkation experience than those who arrive app-ready.
Pre-Voyage: What to Do in the App Before You Sail
- Download and set up: Download the Virgin Voyages Sailor App (iOS or Android) and connect your booking using your booking reference number.
- Complete online check-in: Online check-in opens approximately 60 days before sailing. Complete it as early as possible — upload your passport or ID photo, add your payment method for onboard charges, and confirm your personal details. This dramatically speeds up the physical embarkation process.
- Add your credit card: Your onboard account links to a card added through the app. All charges (overages above Bar Tab, spa, Shore Things) will be billed here.
- Link bookings with travel companions: If you are sailing with people in other cabins, link your bookings through the app’s Friends section. Without linking, you cannot make dining reservations for a group or see each other’s schedules.
- Set dining reservation reminders: Know your reservation window (15, 45, or 60 days out based on fare tier) and set a calendar alert for midnight Eastern Time the night before it opens.
- Book Shore Things: Shore Things (excursions) can be booked through the app starting after your booking is confirmed. Popular excursions at Bimini, Grand Cayman, and other high-demand ports fill quickly.
Embarkation Day: First App Actions Onboard
Connect to ship WiFi the moment you board — before exploring, before going to your cabin, before anything else. Once connected, open the app and:
- Book remaining dining reservations (the other 70% opens when you board)
- Check your Bar Tab balance to confirm it loaded correctly
- Review the event schedule (Agenda tab) for Night 1 timing — Grog Walk and PJ Party
- Activate your Band for cabin access and onboard payments
Onboard Daily App Use
- Agenda tab: Your daily schedule of events, entertainment, and Happenings Cast activities. Check it every morning.
- Ship Eats: Room service orders placed through the app. $10 delivery fee waived on orders of $10 or more (or if you are in a RockStar suite).
- Shake for Champagne: Shake your phone in the app to order a bottle of Moët delivered almost anywhere on the ship. One of Virgin Voyages’s most distinctive features.
- Bar Tab balance: Monitor your remaining Bar Tab balance in real time throughout the voyage. Avoid arriving at the end of the trip with significant unspent credit.
- Dining management: Modify, cancel, or add dining reservations throughout the voyage as your plans evolve.
App Tips and Troubleshooting
The app can be slow or unresponsive when thousands of Sailors hit it simultaneously — most commonly on dining reservation opening night. If the app shows restaurants as “closed” when your window opens, try: force-closing and reopening the app, logging out and back in, or switching to the VirginVoyages.com website instead (often more stable under load).
Insider Tips from Joel and Erin
- Go into airplane mode and connect to ship WiFi immediately upon boarding. This prevents your phone from consuming cellular data while also accessing the ship network, and gets you into the app reservation system faster than other Sailors who are still checking their phones on cellular.
- Use the website as a backup for the app. VirginVoyages.com My Account and the Sailor App share the same system. If the app is struggling, the website is often faster.
- Check the Agenda tab every morning. Events change, times shift, and hidden Happenings Cast activities appear with little advance notice. The Agenda is the only reliable way to stay current on what’s happening.
