The Port: Piraeus

The connection between port and city is fast and well-organized: the metro from Piraeus to central Athens runs every 10 minutes and takes about 25 minutes to Monastiraki station, placing you directly in the heart of the old city. For Sailors arriving the day before sailing, the areas of Monastiraki, Syntagma, and Koukaki (near the Acropolis) offer convenient accommodation close to the city’s highlights.
The Acropolis and Archaeological Sites
The Acropolis is non-negotiable. The Parthenon (dedicated to Athena, construction begun in 447 BCE), the Erechtheion with its Porch of the Caryatids, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea together form the most significant surviving complex of ancient Greek architecture in the world. The Acropolis Museum at the base of the hill houses the original sculptures and provides essential context for what you’re seeing above.
The surrounding archaeological park includes the Ancient Agora (the civic heart of ancient Athens where Socrates taught and democracy was practiced), the Temple of Hephaestus (the best-preserved Greek temple in the world), and the Theater of Dionysus (where Greek tragedy and comedy were performed for the first time in human history).
The City Beyond the Ancient Sites
Modern Athens is significantly more interesting than its tourist reputation suggests. The Monastiraki flea market is one of the Mediterranean’s best browsing experiences. The Plaka neighborhood, the old city at the base of the Acropolis, has excellent traditional tavernas. The Kolonaki neighborhood offers high-end shopping and cafes. The street art scene in Exarcheia and Psyrri is genuinely impressive. And the food — lamb chops at a rooftop taverna, fresh seafood at Piraeus waterfront, Athenian street souvlaki — is excellent across every price point.

- The Acropolis Museum is as important as the Acropolis. The museum contains the sculptures removed from the temple pediments and explains what you’re seeing on the hilltop. Visit it after the Acropolis, on the same day.
