The Bar Tab is one of the most unique financial instruments in cruising, and understanding it properly is the difference between feeling like you have free drinks all week and running out of credit on Day 4. Virgin Voyages replaced the traditional all-inclusive drink package with this pre-paid credit system — more flexible, better for moderate drinkers, and structured to reward those who plan ahead with a genuine bonus on top of what they spend.
Here’s everything you need to know before you buy.
How the Bar Tab Works

Before your cruise — up to 24 hours before sailing — you purchase Bar Tab credit in set amounts. Virgin Voyages adds a bonus on top of whatever you purchase, giving you more spending power than the amount you actually paid. The bonus tiers scale with the amount purchased, with up to a 25% bonus available on larger purchases.
Example: A $300 Bar Tab purchase typically comes with a $50 bonus, giving you $350 in onboard beverage credit. The exact bonus amounts vary by promotion and season — Wave Season deals sometimes push this significantly higher.
Your Bar Tab credit is linked to your Sailor Band wristband. Every time you order a drink, the charge comes off your Bar Tab first, then Sailor Loot, then your onboard account.

What Bar Tab Covers
Bar Tab can be used at almost every bar and restaurant onboard, plus at The Beach Club at Bimini for alcoholic drinks (basic drinks are included at Bimini, but cocktails and premium beverages are not). It covers:
- All cocktails, wines, beers, and spirits at any ship bar
- Premium beverages at restaurants during meals
- Room service drinks
- Specialty coffees beyond the basic included options
- Fresh-pressed juices at Gym & Tonic and Juice Sea
- Drinks at The Beach Club at Bimini
What Bar Tab Does NOT Cover
This is where people get caught off guard:
- Grog Walk — ticketed experience, must pay with Sailor Loot or credit card
- Mixology classes / Shot 4 Shot — same, ticketed experience
- Bottomless brunch upcharge — this is charged to Sailor Loot
- Casino drinks at tables — Bar Tab cannot be used at casino tables
- Wine and spirit tasting events — classified as experiences, not individual drinks
How Much Bar Tab to Buy
The honest answer: it depends on how much you drink. As a rough guide for a 7-night sailing: light drinkers (1-2 drinks per day) might need $150-200; moderate drinkers (3-4 drinks per day) typically need $300-400; heavy drinkers or cocktail enthusiasts should consider $500+. Factor in specialty coffees and Bimini if those are part of your plan.
Bar Tab is non-refundable and expires on the final morning of your voyage. Buy too much and you’re leaving money behind. The goal is to buy enough to capture the maximum bonus tier while not leaving significant credit unused.
Stacking Bar Tab with Sailor Loot
Wave Season promotions frequently combine the 80% off second Sailor discount with a Bar Tab offer. Additionally, First Mate booking can add Sailor Loot that effectively supplements your Bar Tab budget. The optimal strategy: book during Wave Season through a First Mate, apply the promotional Bar Tab offer, and use Sailor Loot for overages or spa charges.
Premium Fare Bar Tab
The Premium VoyageFair fare tier includes $15 per Sailor per night in Bar Tab credit. On a 7-night sailing for two Sailors, that is $210 in included Bar Tab — partially offsetting the $630 fare premium. If you are considering Premium fare, factor the included Bar Tab into the value calculation.
Bar Tab Expiration and Last-Day Strategy
Bar Tab expires at the end of your voyage. Unused credit does not roll over to future sailings. Monitor your balance in the Virgin Voyages app during your sailing and plan to use it fully before your final evening onboard. The Bimini Beach Club bars are an excellent last-day Bar Tab venue on Miami itineraries — six full bars, exceptional cocktails, and the most beautiful setting in the Caribbean to drain the last of your credit.
Insider Tips from Joel and Erin
- Buy in advance, not onboard. The bonus is only available on pre-purchased Bar Tab. Onboard purchases don’t carry the bonus. This is real money — don’t skip it.
- Watch for Wave Season promotions. Virgin Voyages regularly runs enhanced Bar Tab bonus offers during promotional periods. Booking during a Wave offer can push the bonus significantly higher than standard.
- Your Bar Tab is tied to your Sailor Band, not your cabin. Each person’s Bar Tab is individual. If one person drinks more than the other, they can top up their own Bar Tab independently.
- Use Sailor Loot strategically for non-drink purchases. Keep your Sailor Loot available for Grog Walk, mixology classes, shore excursions, and spa treatments — the things Bar Tab won’t cover.
