Colombian cuisine is extraordinary and underappreciated. Avoid the overpriced tourist restaurants directly on the main plazas. Walk one street back and the prices drop by half and the quality goes up.

- Currency: Colombian pesos. US dollars are widely accepted but you’ll get better rates paying in pesos. ATMs available in the terminal and throughout the Old City.
- Heat: Cartagena is hot year-round. Start early, carry water, wear a hat. The morning hours before 11am are dramatically more comfortable than midday.
- Safety: The Old City and Getsemaní are safe for tourists during daylight hours. Avoid carrying expensive jewelry or flashing large amounts of cash. Standard urban common sense applies.
