It's also genuinely different from Alaska on any other cruise line, because it pairs the adults-only VV onboard experience with one of the most dramatic destinations in cruising. We're Joel and Erin, and here's what to expect.
Juneau — Alaska's capital, only reachable by sea or air. Brilliant Lady's port calls in Juneau are often longer than competitors — frequently noon-to-late-evening, giving you a full afternoon and into the evening on shore. The signature Shore Things: Mendenhall Glacier (helicopter to the glacier surface for a guided walk is the splurge move), whale watching in Stephens Passage (humpbacks are nearly guaranteed in season), the Mt. Roberts Tramway for the view, and downtown Juneau itself for the breweries and salmon dinners.
Ketchikan — Alaska's "first city," the salmon capital, and the most colorful port on the route. Creek Street's wooden boardwalk built on pilings over the salmon stream, the totem pole parks (Saxman and Totem Bight), the Misty Fjords floatplane tour (the single most photogenic Shore Thing in Alaska — book it the day you book your voyage), and the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show for the cheesy-but-fun option.
Sitka — The most Russian-influenced of the Alaska ports — Sitka was the capital of Russian America before the 1867 sale. Sitka National Historical Park (the totem trail), St. Michael's Cathedral, the Alaska Raptor Center, and the Fortress of the Bear are the cultural moves. Sea otter and wildlife tours from Sitka are some of the best in Southeast Alaska.
Skagway — Gold Rush history end-to-end. The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is one of the great train rides in North America — a narrow-gauge railroad climbing into the mountains with views down to the fjords. Book the Shore Thing for the railway; book it early. The town itself feels like a preserved 1898 frontier strip and the walking is easy.
Glacier days — Brilliant Lady itineraries include scenic cruising of Tracy Arm Fjord and/or Hubbard Glacier. These are not port calls — the ship cruises into the fjord/glacier face and you stay on deck. Bring layers. Hubbard Glacier in particular is enormous and active (calving regularly).
Alaska Shore Things sell out faster than any other region in the VV inventory. The reason is simple: limited operators, limited daily capacity, peak summer season. Book the day reservations open or be ready to be disappointed. The non-negotiables in our experience:
1) Mendenhall Glacier helicopter + ice walk (Juneau) — weather-dependent, so the cancellation policy is generous, but the slots themselves go in hours. 2) Misty Fjords floatplane (Ketchikan) — fixed daily capacity, sells out first. 3) White Pass Railway (Skagway) — the train has limited cabin capacity. 4) Whale watching in Juneau or Icy Strait — small-boat operators, limited slots. 5) Tracy Arm Fjord small-boat tour when offered as a Shore Thing on glacier days.
Packing for Alaska on a VV ship: layers, layers, layers. A real waterproof jacket. Hiking shoes (not your sneakers — actual hiking shoes if you're doing the helicopter ice walk or Misty Fjords trails). Binoculars. A reusable bottle. And remember that even on glacier days, the onboard VV experience is in full swing — the bars are open, the pools are heated, and Sip Lounge with champagne facing a glacier face is one of the all-time-great onboard moments.
