The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center — accessible from the Pacific side in Panama City — is the most visited Canal attraction, but from Colón you access the Agua Clara Locks, the new expanded locks completed in 2016 that now handle the largest vessels in the world. The visitor center at Agua Clara offers an observation platform directly over the lock operation. Watching a Panamax container ship rise or fall through the locks with water displacement you can feel in your chest is a genuinely moving experience.
The Panama Railroad
The Panama Railroad is one of the most historically significant railway journeys in the Americas — the first railroad to connect two oceans, completed in 1855 at enormous human cost. From Colón, the train runs parallel to the Canal through Soberania National Park to Panama City. - Do not walk outside the cruise terminal independently. Colón city has significant safety challenges. All shore activity should be via organized Shore Things or private guided tours.
- The Free Trade Zone: Colón is home to the second-largest Free Trade Zone in the world. Duty-free shopping is available within the secure zone near the terminal.
- Currency: Panama uses the US dollar. No currency exchange needed.
