Grand Cayman: Georgetown Port Day Guide for Virgin Voyages Sailors

Grand Cayman is one of the Caribbean’s great paradoxes: a prosperous, sophisticated British Overseas Territory with world-class diving, Seven Mile Beach (one of the most famous stretches of sand in the hemisphere), and a financial sector that makes it technically not a developing country — sharing a port with cruise ships visiting an island that genuinely doesn’t need cruise tourism economically. The result is a port day that is polished, well-organized, expensive by Caribbean standards, and genuinely excellent for the right activities.

Georgetown: The Capital

Georgetown is clean, safe, and efficiently organized for cruise visitors. The duty-free shopping district along Harbour Drive caters to cruise Sailors with jewelry, spirits, and premium goods at competitive prices. The capital is not where the island’s best experiences are, but it’s a pleasant staging ground for getting to them.

Best Things to Do

Seven Mile Beach: Consistently ranked among the top beaches in the Caribbean and the world. Fine white sand, calm clear water, and a beach infrastructure that’s well-maintained without being overcrowded near the public beach access points. A short taxi ride from Georgetown.

Stingray City: The most popular excursion in all of Grand Cayman — a shallow sandbar where Southern stingrays have been gathering for decades, attracted by fishermen cleaning their catch. Swimming and holding the stingrays is the activity. It is genuinely extraordinary to be surrounded by stingrays that swim between and over you voluntarily. Diving: Grand Cayman’s wall dives (particularly the Cayman Wall on the north shore) are world-class. The visibility, marine life density, and variety of dive sites make it one of the Caribbean’s finest dive destinations.

Cayman Turtle Centre: A marine conservation and research facility that also functions as an attraction, with sea turtles of all sizes in various stages of the conservation program. An educational and genuinely engaging experience.

Insider Tips from Joel and Erin

  • Stingray City is not optional. Every Sailor who visits Grand Cayman should do Stingray City. It is one of the most unique wildlife encounters available anywhere in the Caribbean and it is safe, well-managed, and extraordinary.
  • Seven Mile Beach is best at the public access points farther from Georgetown. The closer sections near the port tend to be more crowded. Walk or taxi farther north for more beach and fewer crowds.
  • Grand Cayman is expensive. Manage expectations on dining and incidental costs. This is not a bargain Caribbean port. Budget accordingly.
