Miami: Everything to Do Before and After Your Virgin Voyages Cruise

PortMiami is the embarkation point for the majority of Virgin Voyages Caribbean sailings — and Miami is one of the most dynamic, food-forward, culturally rich cities in America. Sailors who treat Miami as merely a logistical stopover — fly in, board, sail away — are missing the opportunity to combine a Virgin Voyages Caribbean cruise with one of the country’s great city experiences.

Whether you arrive a day early, stay a day after, or both, Miami rewards the time.

Getting to PortMiami

PortMiami is located on Dodge Island, connected to downtown Miami by a bridge. From Miami International Airport (MIA), it’s approximately 15-20 minutes by taxi or rideshare. From Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which many Sailors use due to lower fares, it’s approximately 35-45 minutes depending on traffic.

RockStar Quarters guests receive complimentary private transfers or parking at PortMiami’s Terminal V as part of their suite perks. All other Sailors can park at the port (fees apply) or use rideshare.

Pre-Cruise Miami: Where to Stay

South Beach (Miami Beach): The iconic Art Deco district with Ocean Drive, world-famous nightlife, and the best beach access in the city. A 20-minute drive from the port but worth the distance for an overnight before your sailing.

Wynwood: Miami’s arts district, known for the Wynwood Walls outdoor mural complex and a dense restaurant and bar scene. Closer to the port and more accessible for early-morning embarkation.

Brickell: Miami’s financial district and a rapidly developed neighborhood with excellent restaurants and hotels, walkable to the downtown waterfront, and close to the port bridge.

What to Do

Wynwood Walls: The outdoor museum of large-scale murals that transformed a warehouse district into a global street art destination. Free to walk; the Wynwood Walls enclosed section has an admission fee.

South Beach: The Art Deco Historic District, Ocean Drive, and the beach itself are genuinely worth experiencing. A morning walk, a swim, and breakfast at one of the Art Deco cafes before your sailing day is a perfect pre-cruise morning.

Versailles Restaurant (Little Havana): The flagship of Miami’s Cuban culinary culture. Cuban coffee (café con leche), Cuban sandwich, and ropa vieja in the city with the largest Cuban diaspora in America is an experience specific to Miami.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens: A turn-of-the-century Italian Renaissance villa on Biscayne Bay with extraordinary formal gardens. One of the genuinely beautiful places in Miami.

Insider Tips from Joel and Erin

  • Arrive the night before. Embarkation day logistics are stressful enough without a same-day flight into Miami. Build in a night’s buffer.
  • Terminal V at PortMiami is well-run. Virgin Voyages’s dedicated terminal is efficient and relatively pleasant. Arrive 2-2.5 hours before departure to account for check-in and security.
  • Post-cruise: South Beach is worth one more day. If you can extend your trip by a night after disembarkation, South Beach and Wynwood give you a Miami experience that complements the sailing beautifully.
