Portsmouth is Virgin Voyages’ British homeport and the gateway to the European sailing season. A working naval city on England’s south coast with a maritime heritage dating back to the 11th century, Portsmouth has hosted every Lady Ship since Scarlet Lady’s maiden voyage in 2021. For British Sailors, it is the most convenient VV embarkation point in the country. For international Sailors flying into the UK, it is a genuinely interesting city to spend a night before sailing — one of the great naval history destinations in the world.
The Historic Dockyard
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is one of the finest naval heritage sites in the world. The three headline attractions: HMS Victory (Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar, the oldest commissioned warship in the world, still in Royal Navy service), HMS Warrior (the world’s first iron-hulled, armour-plated warship, 1860), and the Mary Rose (Henry VIII’s warship, raised from the Solent in 1982, now displayed in a climate-controlled museum with thousands of recovered artifacts). Allow a full day.
Getting to Portsmouth
Portsmouth is approximately 75 miles southwest of London. Direct trains from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour take 1h45m–2h. The International Port terminal is within walking distance of Portsmouth Harbour station. The cruise terminal is modern and well-organized.
Gunwharf Quays
The regenerated waterfront area adjacent to the cruise terminal, featuring the Spinnaker Tower (170m observation tower with views across the Solent and South Downs), designer outlet shopping, and an excellent cluster of waterfront restaurants and bars.
Insider Tips from Joel and Erin
- Arrive the day before and spend the evening at Gunwharf Quays. The Spinnaker Tower at sunset and dinner overlooking the Solent is an excellent pre-cruise evening.
- HMS Victory is genuinely extraordinary. The Victory is still a commissioned Royal Navy warship. Walking her gun decks and seeing where Nelson died is one of the great historical experiences in Britain.
- 2026 is the last VV season from Portsmouth. VV has announced it will not return to Portsmouth in 2027. These are the final sailings from the UK homeport. Book accordingly.
