Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala: Virgin Voyages Port Guide

Puerto Quetzal is Guatemala’s largest Pacific port, the country’s industrial shipping gateway, and the VV stop on the Panama Canal crossing that gives Sailors access to one of the most extraordinary cities in the Americas: Antigua Guatemala. The port itself is purely functional — there is nothing to see or do at Puerto Quetzal beyond the terminal. But ninety minutes inland lies a colonial city of such extraordinary beauty and historical depth that Sailors who venture there consistently describe it as the most memorable port day of the entire Canal voyage.

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua was founded in 1543 and served as the capital of Spanish Central America until a catastrophic earthquake in 1773 forced the capital’s relocation to present-day Guatemala City. The city was partially abandoned but never fully rebuilt or modernized, which means it survives today as one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial cities in the Western Hemisphere. The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Baroque colonial architecture, ruined churches open to the sky, cobblestone streets, and three active volcanoes visible on the horizon create a visual environment unlike anywhere else on the VV network.

  • La Merced Church: The most photogenic building in Antigua — a yellow baroque façade that has been photographed millions of times and never loses its impact. The attached convent has a circular fountain that is one of the most beautiful architectural details in Central America.
  • Santa Catalina Arch: The iconic yellow arch spanning Calle del Arco with Volcán de Agua framing the background — one of the most photographed views in all of Central America.
  • Cerro de la Cruz: A 20-minute walk uphill from the city center to a cross on a hilltop with a panoramic view of Antigua and the surrounding volcano ring.
  • Coffee farm tour: Guatemala produces some of the world’s finest coffee. The Filadelfia Coffee Estate near Antigua offers excellent tours from seed to cup. VV Shore Things includes curated coffee estate visits.

Volcán Pacaya

For the most adventurous Sailors: Volcán Pacaya is an active volcano accessible in about 90 minutes from Puerto Quetzal. A two-hour hike from the parking area reaches the active summit zone where you can roast marshmallows in volcanic vents and stand on hardened lava flows from recent eruptions. This is a moderately strenuous excursion but one of the most distinctive experiences available from any VV port.

Lake Atitlán

For the most scenic destination from Puerto Quetzal: Lake Atitlán, the caldera lake ringed by three volcanoes that Aldous Huxley called “the most beautiful lake in the world.” It’s a long day from the port — about 3.5 hours each way — but Sailors who make the trip consistently describe it as one of the most visually overwhelming places they have ever seen. Best for 12-night+ Canal itineraries where time allows.

Practical Notes

  • Distance to Antigua: Approximately 90 minutes by road. All excursions require transportation. Book through VV Shore Things for the guaranteed ship-wait protection.
  • Currency: Guatemalan quetzales, but USD is accepted almost everywhere in the tourist areas of Antigua.
  • Altitude: Antigua sits at 1,530 meters (5,000 feet) elevation. Significantly cooler than the port. Bring a light layer.

Insider Tips from Joel and Erin

  • Go to Antigua. Don’t stay at the port. There is genuinely nothing to do at Puerto Quetzal itself. Antigua is 90 minutes away and one of the most extraordinary cities in the hemisphere. The distance is the only barrier and it’s worth crossing.
  • The coffee tour is the best combination of culture and experience. Guatemala’s coffee is world-class and the farm tours are genuinely excellent. If you have to choose between the volcano and the coffee tour, choose based on your fitness level.
  • The Antigua food market is a revelation. The morning market near the Central Park in Antigua has food stalls serving traditional Guatemalan breakfast — tamales, chiles rellenos, plantains, and fresh juice at extraordinary prices. Budget 30 minutes here.
