The City
Santa Barbara’s downtown is centered on State Street, a pedestrian-friendly commercial corridor of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture running from the mountains toward the sea. The Santa Barbara Courthouse — an extraordinary 1929 building with panoramic views from the clock tower — is the architectural centerpiece of the city. The Old Mission Santa Barbara (founded 1786, the “Queen of the Missions”) is a 10-minute drive or pleasant bike ride from downtown.
The Waterfront
The Santa Barbara Harbor and Stearns Wharf — the oldest wooden pier on the West Coast, extending into the Pacific — are walkable from the cruise dock. The Harbor restaurant scene is excellent. Lure Fish House at the harbor is the benchmark for fresh California seafood. The West Beach and East Beach are excellent for an afternoon.
Wine Country
Santa Ynez Valley wine country is 45 minutes from the harbor. The region produces world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and was made famous by the film Sideways. Numerous wineries offer tastings accessible via the VV Shore Things wine country tour.
The Santa Barbara Channel Islands
Channel Islands National Park — five islands in the Santa Barbara Channel — is accessible via day trip from the harbor. Island Packers runs regular service to Santa Cruz Island, where the world’s largest sea cave, excellent kayaking, and extraordinary wildlife (island foxes, brown pelicans, harbor seals) await. One of the great day trips from any West Coast port.

- Rent a bike. Santa Barbara is extraordinarily bikeable. The waterfront path, Stearns Wharf, and the wine tasting rooms on lower State Street are all accessible on a rental bike.
- The Channel Islands trip is the best shore excursion. Book through VV Shore Things. The sea caves and island fox sightings are extraordinary.
- Allow time at the Courthouse. The 1929 Santa Barbara Courthouse is one of the most beautiful public buildings in the United States. The clock tower view is worth the climb.
